The plight of West Papuans for freedom has resulted in the Top End’s punk bands getting together to hold a concert.
This Saturday they will converge on Happy Yess to perform in the concert “Punks for West Papua” to raise awareness about what is happening in the region.
Clever Monkey lead vocalist Callum Munro said this would be their second year of holding the event.
Last year they were contacted by organisers in Sydney to see if they were interested in participating in the national event.
This year it has gone global, with concerts set to be held in Spain and the Pacific Islands.
“When the organisers told me this year it was going to be happening again I jumped on board,” he said.
He admitted before he was contacted last year he had no idea what the people of West Papua were going through.
“I was pretty horrified,” he said. “The reason I think I didn’t know about it is because there’s a complete media ban over there.”
Mr Munro said the punk genre of music went with the grain of the event.
“It’s going with the whole thing about punk, where it’s music that’s politically motived and standing up against the institution,” he said.
He said there would be guest speakers from West Papua as well at west Papuan flags — which are illegal to fly in West Papua.
Other bands taking to the stage include, Acid City, Audiograph, Eugene Whitecastle and the Bad Haircuts and Kayoss.
“All the other bands being aware of the success off the show are interested in global events and all jumped at the chance,” he said.
Tickets are $10 at the door, with funds raised going towards the United Liberation Movement for West Papua.
Doors for the event open at 9.30pm at Happy Yess on Saturday.
