Jayapura, DP/Jubi - Dr Richard Chauvel from the University of Melbourne Asia Institute, said he had never heard a loud statement from a leader of Papua New Guinea (PNG), when they talk about West Papua which is one of the provinces in Indonesia. However statement PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neill in an interview with Radio Australia, Friday (27/03/2015) is very loud statement and potentially embarrass Indonesia.
"Candor Peter O'Neill to hold the government to fulfill commitments Jokowi previous president, Susilo Bambang Yoedhoyono (SBY) is honesty that is extraordinary," said Richard Cauvel after O'Neill interviewed by Radio Australia, Friday (27/03/2015).
O'Neill while in Australia to attend the funeral of Malcolm Fraser, former Prime Minister of Australia has been interviewed by Radio Australia West Papua related. In this interview, O'Neill asked the Indonesian government fulfill the promise of reducing military personnel in West Papua.
According to O'Neill, the reduction of military personnel is the promise of President Yudhoyono when he met with the former president of Indonesia is in a bilateral meeting between Indonesia and PNG in Jakarta.
"We will continue to try to ensure that the Indonesian government today has the same view of the reduction of the military presence in Papua. And greater autonomy would be better for the people of West Papua, "said O'Neill told Radio Australia.
This statement is called by Richard Chauvel, an expert on West Papua, very hard and has the potential to embarrass the government of Indonesia.
"But he (O'Neill) was also very careful in how it connects statement for more effective implementation of autonomy for West Papua and Indonesia responsibilities as a member of the international community," said Chauvel on Saturday (28/3 / 2015), report tabloidjubi.com
Chauvel even doubt the Indonesian version of the statement on the meeting of Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi with O'Neill recently.
"The Indonesian version of the meeting with Mr. O'Neill, however, is very much different," he said.
